I finally made some Zick Dough suet and put it out in one of the feeder cups. It took no time at all before the female bluebird was eating it to beat the band. She looked up as if to say, "Hey now, I don't recall your offering this yummy treat before!" Moments later, her husband caught onto the goodness in the cup. Soon other birds were checking it out as well. The Pine Warbler and Wren were next in line.It was really quite easy to do. Just follow the recipe:
1 cup lard
1 cup peanut butter
2 cups instant oats
2 cups yellow corn meal
1 cups flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 cup peanut butter
2 cups instant oats
2 cups yellow corn meal
1 cups flour
1/3 cup sugar
Simply melt the lard and peanut butter together over low heat. Once smooth, remove from heat and add the dry ingredients. It's easier to just use your hands as mixing that much with a spoon is rather challenging. I also doubled the recipe. Once it was all mixed, I spread it out onto a cookie sheet and popped it into the frig to cool. After a couple of hours, I cut in into chunky squares and threw it into gallon sized bags. Easy breezy, and LOTS of dough to offer some very appreciative birds! Thanks Julie!

Fry it up, and it sounds like something I might try for breakfast!

I will definitely try the recipe in a week or two.
That female bluebird was looking at you with a stunned expression on her face! LOL!
My yard birds love it too!
I need to make some up this week -- it's cold and rainy and the birds need some extra love! But, I still don't have any birds coming except hummers. Sigh. Let your feeders go a few weeks and it's hard to be forgiven. Maybe some Zick dough will tip them over to my side again!
You rock! And what better way to make winter go by faster than to invite some lovely bluebirds to share your yard.
I'm amazed they ate it right off the bat. I've always had to coax them in with mealworms first, until they figured out it was good for them.
Good going!
Thanks so much for the recipe!
I will make some up and see who comes. If Blue Birds are still around I would love to see them at my feeders.
I love seeing all your birds!
Happy Holidays to you and yours,
Hugs,
Sherry
wow sounds good - a festive treat for the birds..
Thanks for the recipe, I made something similar a few days ago. The only birds enjoying it at the moment though are starlings.
I love bluebirds, lucky you!
Oh, I am so going to make some soon! Your photos are beautiful!
the birds really love that stuff!
Thank you for the recipe...as soon as I exhaust my supply of suet cakes I am going to try it. Sure wish I had the bluebirds to eat it like you do :-)
Great photos as always!
