Oh, I heard him, loud and clear. It was a crisp fall day back in November and I heard his call from across the street. I ran out onto the porch and with my binos, looked and looked towards the neighbor's yard. Finally, I saw him fly from one tall hardwood to another, his red crest flaming in the sunshine. I was thrilled as I'd never seen one around here. I found myself pleading with him to come visit the tree line behind our house so I could get a better look at him and possibly a nice photo. He finally obliged me, though the sun was shining brightly on his face.
The other day, I was speaking with my neighbor whom I finally met while out weeding the mailbox bed, and asked him about his yard resident as I'd heard his "kuk-kuk-kuk" recently each morning over there as I was out getting the newspaper. "He's huge," my neighbor said with a grin. "Come see what he's done." We walked over to his yard behind a dead tree and I looked up as he pointed to the work project. Wow... what a hole! All around this dead tree were huge holes bored out. The one pictured above was probably a foot long and the largest and most impressive. I can't look at the Pileated Woodpecker without thinking of something prehistoric. He's just one cool bird!

Every day lately you have posted a beautiful and interesting bird picture. What a great shot today. You are right, he does look prehistoric.

Wonderful shot, Jayne! If I should see a Pileated from a distance, there's no telling what I'd do...
It's nice to have a neighbor who's willing to share the view, isn't it?
Nice post.
What a busy guy! Great picture of him with his red cap. As I recall, woodpeckers have some sort of padding at the back of their skulls so their little brains don't get bruised by that repeated jarring....
I have only seen Pileateds flying -- what a treat to see one so close up. When I watch the Steller's Jays in my yard, I always think of some prehistoric dinosaur. They are big and they have a crest and they move just like those dinosaurs in Jurassic Park! :)
Now that is one cool bird... I've never seen one - thank you for sharing yours...Katie,x
I've never had a good look at a Pileated, but I think I would recognize that rectangular nest hole anyway. I guess they nest at your neighbor's?
So it is a nesting hole! I was not sure Laura. I just know I hear him over there lately, but never see him... he must be busy in there. ;c)
We have a Pileated, but we never get close enough to get a photo. Your pictures are GREAT!
It's hard to imagine that you are so far ahead of us! Here in NY state we have just lost the last of the snow and the crocuses are peeking out of the earth. No such thing as baby bluebirds yet! We did see two pair of adults this past weekend, checking out the houses which they will compete with the sparrows for. Today it is sunny and worm, and I would give anything to stay home from work and just enjoy the spring weather!
it's not easy to both spot and take a picture of a woodpecker ~ way cool!
I love Pileateds! We're fortunate to get them at our suet feeders regularly. Here's a female which I caught as she was heading for a snack.
In flight I think they evoke Pterodactyls. And then there's that call that wakes the neighborhood...
Great post!
Garavin,
WOW! What a very cool shot of the Pileated!! Welcome and thanks for stopping by!
